SPARKMAN CELLARS KINGPIN

Woodinville, Washington          ABV:  14.5%

WINERY DESCRIPTION:

Kingpin is brawny powerful Red Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon: (black fruit and iron) with a pinch of Merlot (chocolate and cherry liqueur) and Petit Verdot (violets, game, spice cake). Intensely concentrated fruit aromas of blackberry, wild cherry, black plum, black currant and cigar box and cedar lead to a palatial eruption of chocolate covered black fruit, deep forest and stony earth.

FOUNDERS’ NOTES:
Launched in 2006, Kingpin celebrates the raw power and intensity of Red Mountains's iconic Klipsun Vineyard. Although we have no definitive conclusion on its ultimate life span due to the fact that we have only made it for 10 years or so and have none even beginning to peak, we suspect this is a wine that can be enjoyed for at least 30 years, if not many more.

Critical Acclaim
RP 91 - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Kingpin is a bigger, richer, riper wine than the Rainmaker release. A blend of 94% Cabernet and 6% Petit Verdot, aged the same 22 months in 72% new French oak, it offers up lots of kirsch liqueur, blackberry, chocolate, toasted spice and dried herbs, full-bodied richness, and the classic savory Red Mountain tannin that’s the hallmark from this AVA. It’s approachable now, but I think it will be even better with short-term cellaring, and be at its best from 2018-2032.

WE 90 - Wine Enthusiast
Aromatically brooding, this has notes of dark cherries, blackberries, mineral and herbs with abundant barrel accents. It's full bodied, rich and high octane, at times seeming a bit overwrought but still delivering plenty of enjoyment.

Sparkman Cellars is located in Woodinville, Washington. The first vintages, 2004 through 2006, were made at Mark Ryan Winery, with help from the godfather of the Woodinville wine scene, Mark Ryan McNeilly. As with many wineries in western Washington, Sparkman sources their grapes from some of the finest vineyards in Eastern Wasington.
