Satellite Wafers are a nostalgic European candy that gained popularity in the mid-20th century. They were first produced in the 1950s by Belgian confectionery company Belgica, originally a maker of communion wafers. Looking to repurpose their wafer-making equipment after demand for religious wafers declined, the company created these UFO-shaped treats by sandwiching colorful tangy sherbet powder between two edible rice paper discs.
The candy quickly became a hit across Europe, especially in the UK and the Netherlands, during the post-war space craze, thanks to its futuristic, flying saucer appearance. Lightweight, fun to eat, and filled with fizzy powder, Satellite Wafers became a staple in retro sweet shops and remain a beloved novelty candy today!
